Howdy Internet,

I write to you today from a couch in Mobile, Alabama. There’s a cat sleeping on top of me, which is wonderful because it’s 28 degrees outside right now. I’m staying with two wonderful girls, Genevieve and Whitney, for the second night now and I have to say they are quite an impressive duo. Friends for 20 years, one a former cheerleader, the other a former goth, they now manage stellar pizza places, bartend, do neat artsy things, and build muscle cars with grace. These fun loving, curly haired, hilarious girls have made my first Alabama experience a blast and a half.

Can’t wait to see them in California one day!

I gave away a great deal of the things I love the most, packed up my jeep Cherokee in 30 minutes or less and hit the road for the prodigal west. I set my sites for Tallahassee Florida where my best friend brant and his fiancé played a zombie video game with me and smoked too many cigarettes. It’s the first day of a new life chapter and my feelings are a mix of sheepishness and granger. It’s a rocky road ahead, as should be expected in any great adventure. Next stop; couch surfing with some lovely people in Mobile, Alabama!

Oregon, but not forgotten

I awoke today to the chilly Corvallis, OR afternoon and about thirty emails. A while back i did an interview with a lovely girl named Jessica Miller and today her article on myself and Vagabondly Vagrant debuted on a full two page spread in the Venice Gondolier Sun. I couldn’t be more ecstatic! I wish I had a more direct link, but I’m writing on a wireless keyboard into my phone at the moment and am in full mobile mode.

I hope your day is going swimmingly while I rest off my jet lag and try to forget that I’m three hours off. If you are in Venice pick up an issue of the Sun, and if not then maybe you can find it online a bit better then ican from my iphone.

The stars at night

Not sure if this warrants a post, but I just fulfilled a childhood fantasy. While waiting for my flight at the “cowtown bar” in the section A fort worth airport I thought it appropriate to comment on how “I hear the stars at night, are big and bright” at which point the waitress banged on the bar and we all yelled “Deep in the heart of Texas!!!”

Just like in Pee Wee’s Great Adventure.

They say the Alamo doesn’t have a basement, but Texans have made me happy enough for one day.

Oregoing

It’s interesting to think that right now I’m traveling at 500 miles an hour, 30k feet above the gulf of Mexico, and I still have wifi. I remember when I was a child the planes still had ashtrays in them and you were allowed to check one bag for free. Things have changed quite a bit.
In leu of getting overly wordy here’s a short tidbit about the flight thus far.

A woman in my row projectile vomited, which she insists is “just water”

The man in front of me put his seat all the way back, which I equate to telling me my space is his to monopolize. Now whenever I move my legs (which are supporting him at this point) he kicks back and gives me a look.

I’m on my way to Texas, then Portland for a friend’s wedding. But, early november will begin principle photography for my Couchsurfing documentary. If not sooner that is!

Hope your not on this puke filled flight!

Nothing If Not Resilient

Admittedly, I have not posted any major project updates in quite a while, but that is going to take a drastic 180 as of today. Shortly after the launch of my KickStarter fundraising effort I was attacked by a gang of hooligans in Ybor City, Tampa. I was walking to my car with my lovely girlfriend and a Slovakian Couch Surfer when we noticed a group a guys following us. One broken jaw and some remapped facial textures later, the attackers ran away. Luckily, I was the only one they targeted and no one else was injured, but the incident brought my fundraising and promotion efforts to a grinding halt until recently.

Now I’m feeling better then ever, thanks in large part to the support of friends and family. Speaking of friends and family, I will be heading up to Corvallis, OR in about a week to attend the wedding of two of my friends, and am planning to get some interviews with Couch Surfing hosts while I’m out there! This is largely made possible by some generous donations to our project which allowed me to get some protective Pelican Cases for my film gear and a Chimera Light Bank for this project!

Finally got all of my equipment ready for transport!

So, without becoming two long winded, it’s good to be back in action. I’m really excited about the immediate future and can’t wait to start shooting. Oh, and now that we are no longer using KickStarter, if you would like to help out with the production of this film in any way, please feel free to email me or make a donation in by clicking on the “Support Our Film” tab.

Experimental Home Movie

The past couple of days have been filled with home moving chaos! Taking a house full of belongings from Tampa to Venice, Florida ended up being a bit more of a hassle then I had originally planned for. But now that everything is done, I thought I would put a little 16mm experimental tribute video up in honor of all the good times my old house brought me during the past few years.

There are 35 days left of fundraising and we have a long way to go! Check out the Kickstarter & spread the word so we can make this film a success! It’s all or nothing after all!

I created some give away promotional items and am ready to hit the town (possibly even the country) to raise awareness about this film project! I’m excited, Jazzed even, that I finally have the tools to leave a lasting impression with people on the street.

Right now, I’m in the midst of moving from one house to another and have been working on promoting this project mainly on the internet. But, I think that I work a lot better in person, so that’s what I’m going to be doing now. I really enjoy getting to talk with people about what I’m trying to create & how I think this film will leave a lasting, positive influence on it’s viewers.

A Lot Of P&A Work Lately

One of the Kickstarter Paintings I've Made

Things seem to be getting busier and busier around here! I’m excited to say that the project is now 1% funded and all of our fundraising is about to go full swing. Vagabondly Vagrant is starting to reach out into the Couch Surfing Community, flyers are being printed, and local media outlets are being contacted as well. We now have a up and running Facebook page that’s just itching for some “likes” and plans for a cross-country trip to raise awareness of our project (and escort a friend to college) are in the works.

Right now, our main focus is spreading the word about this project & are looking for anyone that might want to led a hand. If you know someone who likes to travel, but thinks that the cost of hotels or hostels will end up dictating their adventures, why not tell them about CouchSurfing? If they seem intrigued by the idea of CSing, suggest they check out Vagabondly Vagrant! We want to show the world what the CouchSurfing culture is about, and how it can change the way we experience other cultures (even the ones close by).

Another interesting development is the completion of our KickStarter paintings, and there are quite a few of them. Each one is a unique piece of art, some of which are quite large. The photo attached is a 10×8 foot painting done in the style of the artist HUSH. I think it’s pretty fun, but each painting is a different style so there are plenty of other flavors for you to choose from. We also have been preparing for some of the other neat swag we are offering; downloads of the finished film, film credits, producer credit, and last but not least- postcards! Check it out and give us a shout!

The Kickstarter Fundraiser Has Begun!

I’m happy to announce that the fundraising for our documentary has officially begun! We decided to fund the project through Kickstarter because it allows anyone (including you!) to pitch in and help make this documentary a reality. Since this is a project that centers around a collective of people, it seemed fitting to have it funded by one as well.

Essentially, Vagabondly Vagrant is a feature length documentary film that centers around the Couch Surfing community and the Non-Profit Organization CouchSurfing.org. CouchSurfing.org is a worldwide network of people that allow travelers to sleep in their homes free of charge, and helps travelers connect with the local communities that they visit.
